What is Figure Skating as Therapy?

Figure skating as therapy is when we use figure skating as a way to work on the body/mind connection, process the past, and gain insight about life and ourselves through learning a new skill. As someone who has coached ice dance for over 20 years, I am very comfortable with skating instruction. In my work, I have blended that with dance movement therapy to create an experience for the client where they are able to work on various skating techniques in a way that fosters emotional integrity and health. We use the breath, develop a better ability to feel the body move, awareness of emotions and energy through skating technique, and the therapeutic relationship between us to cultivate better health and wellness.

This can work for someone who is already comfortable on the ice, as well as for someone who wants to learn how to skate. Any level is appropriate.
